  • San Diego’s Little Italy:
The history of San Diego’s Little Italy goes back over 100 years. The waterfront community represents San Diego's oldest continually active district. From the turn of the 20th Century through the 1960s, Little Italy’s legion of predominantly Italian fishermen, dock workers, boat builders and cannery packers helped San Diego earn the moniker of “the tuna capital of the world.” At its height there were over 6,000 Italian immigrant families living in the neighborhood and working to help build San Diego. Today it is a bustling neighborhood filled with over 70 cafes, restaurants, small markets, condominiums and boutique hotels. The neighborhood has undergone extensive revitalization over the past 20 years. Visitors and residents are enchanted by the public art displays and amazing piazzas. For more information on this historic San Diego district please visit their website. https://www.littleitalysd.com/
  • Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church:
Our Lady of the Rosary was established over 100 years ago and lovingly built by the Italian immigrant families who lived and worked in Little Italy. The church was built by its first pastor, Father Sylvester Rabagliati, a native of Italy and student of St. John Bosco, who arrived in San Diego and was assigned to shepherd San Diego’s growing Italian community, which had no church of their own.Father Rabagliati quickly recruited two of the finest Italian artists he could find to decorate the church in the artistic traditions of Italian churches. He wanted his faithful to feel “at home” in their new country while at the same time inspire them to grow in the faith and the love of God and Our Lady. The church is filled with beautiful murals, stained glass windows and statues. It is often referred to as “The Jewel of Little Italy.” After nearly a century of use, the interior of the church was in much need of some renovations. In 2017, the parish commissioned a preservation firm to restore the church interior to its original glory. Artisans performed an on-site investigation to identify original colors and performed cleaning tests to identify correct conservation materials and techniques to revive the historic murals. Renovations were completed in 2021 and the church received the 2021 California Preservation Design Award for Craftsmanship/Preservation Technology. Today, Our Lady of the Rosary continues to be a bustling church community with many of its members driving from all over San Diego County to attend Mass. It maintains its rich Italian heritage which can be witnessed every October with its annual Festa. Hundreds of San Diegans flock to this parish to celebrate Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and follow the Eucharistic procession through the streets of Little Italy complete with beautiful statues on rolling floats, prayers and singing. https://www.olrsd.org/
